Emmanuel!
Voices Found #46

Emmanuel! The angel's ancient chorus

today unfolds before us, the final triumph starts.

Emmanuel! within that name a treasure,

announcing God's good pleasure to dwell within our hearts.

The Women's Lectionary for the Whole Church appoints Psalm 47 and Hebrews 1:1-9  to end the liturgical year, celebrating The Majesty of Christ.  (closest to November 23).

Psalm 47

All you people clap your hands;

shout to God with a joyful sound.

For the Sovereign God, the Most High, is awesome,

a great governor over all the earth.

She subdued peoples under us,

and nations under our feet.

She chose our heritage for us,

the pride of Rebekah's womb whom she loves.

God has gone up with.a shout,

Sinai's Fire with the sound of a trumpet.

Sing praises to God, sing praises;

sing praises to our Sovereign, sing praises.

For God is Sovereign over all the earth;

sing praises with a psalm.

God is ruler over the nations;

God is seated on her holy throne.

The nobles of the people gather,

the people of the God of Hagar and Sarah;

for to God belong the shields of the earth,

she is highly exalted.

Psalm 47, tr. Gafney

Emmanuel!

Emmanuel! He laid aside his splendor,

and paradise surrendered that we might be set free.

Emmanuel! He rises now victorious,

to live forever glorious, and reign eternally.

When the Son had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much greater than the angels as the name he inherited is more excellent then theirs.

For to which of the angels did God ever say,

'you are my Child; today I have begotten you'?

Or this:

'I will be their parent, and they will be my Child'?

Hebrews 1:3-6, tr. Gafney

Emmanuel!

Emmanuel! Our God in us is dwelling,

our God within us telling, that he has come to save.

Emmanuel! the angels sing their glory,

of Christ our hope of glory, the King is risen today!

Words and Music: Betsey Mulloy

Meditation:

Emmanuel! From  glorious majesty to a  donkey's stable, Christ is with us.

Deep breath in: Christ be with me.

Deep breath out: Christ is in me.

Deep breath in: Christ be near me.

Deep breath out: Christ be in me.

Deep breath in: Christ prepare me.

Deep breath out: Christ receive me.

Emmanuel, in your majesty, be my strength and shield as I await your coming.  Help me to fear not as I trust in your glory.

                                               Rejoice!
