 Voices Found #90

God of freedom

God of freedom, God of justice,

you whose love is strong as death,

you who saw the dark of prison,

you who knew the price of faith--

touch our world of sad oppression

with your spirit's healing breath.

Words: Shirley Erena Murray, (1931-2020)

Music: Libertad, Robert A. M. Ross.

In Acts 12:6-17 we learn of Peter's imprisonment at the hand of Herod and his release by  some fierce angels.  When he was free, he ran to the house of Mary, the mother of John, where many  believers were gathered.  He knocked on the door.  In astonishment and  joy, Rhoda saw him but could not open the door. She ran to tell the others.  The believers did not believer HER. Then finally, in amazement, they let Peter in.

Then signaling to them with his hand to be still, Peter described in detail how the Most High brought him out from prison.  And he said to them."Tell these things to James and to the sisters and brothers." And he left and went to another place.  Acts 12:17, tr. Gafney

Rid the earth of torture's terror,

you whose hands were nailed to wood;

hear the cries of pain and protest,

you who shed the tears and blood--

move in us the power of pity restless for the common good.

Jesus was teaching in a synagogue and suddenly there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity that for eighteen years had crippled her; she was bent over and was not able to stand up completely.  Now when Jesus saw her, he called out and said,"Woman, you are set free from your infirmity."  Then he laid his hands on her and immediately she stood up and began glorifying God.

The synagogue leader was furious because Jesus healed on the Sabbath. Jesus answered, "Hypocrites! Each of you, do you not on the Sabbath untie your ox or donkey from the manger and lead it to drink?  And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham [and Sarah] whom Satan bound--Look!--for eighteen long years, ought she not be set free from this bondage on the Sabbath day?" When Jesus said this, all who opposed him were put to shame and the entire crowd rejoiced at all the glorious things being done by him. Luke 13:10-14, 15-17

Prayer of Praise

Voices Found #108

To God be the glory, great things he has done!

So loved he the world that he gave us his son,

who yielded his life an atonement for sin

and opened the life-gate that all may go in.

Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!

Let the earth hear his voice!

Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! Let the people rejoice!

O come to the Father, through Jesus the son,

and give him the glory! Great things he has done!

Words: Fanny Crosby (1820-1915)

Music: W. H. Diane (1832-1916)
