Voices Found: Rejoicing in persistent grace,The Philadelphia Eleven, VF 94, 21, 1, 9, 12, 13, 16

O God of Persistent Grace, you called the Philadelphia Eleven to the priesthood and granted them courage and boldness to respond, thereby opening the eyes of your church to the giftedness and equality of all: grant us so to hear, trust, and follow your Holy Spirit wherever she may lead, that the gifts of all your people may flourish throughout the earth, through Christ our Savior. Amen.

This commemoration was approved for trial use at General Convention 2024

Voices Found # 94, verse 1

In boldness lean on God for help,

like womenfolk who dared:

to ask that Jesus heal a child,

that crumbs of grace be shared,

that outcast ones be welcomed to the feast God has prepared.

Words: Mary Louise Bringle

Music: Morning song

Voices Found # 21, verse 1, 5

God of the women who answered your call,

trusting your promise, giving their all

women like Sarah and Hannah and Ruth

give us their courage to live in your truth.

O God of Phoebe and ministers all,

may we be joyful in answering your call.

Give us the strength of your Spirit so near,

that we may share in your ministry here.

Words: Carolyn Winfrey Gillette

Music: Slane

Voices Found arose from, and was inspired by,  the persistent prayer and courage of the Philadelphia Eleven.  Twenty years after that first ordination,  lay women in the Episcopal church still felt that their voices  were not  heard in the Church's liturgy and music.  Shortly after a celebration of the 20th anniversary  of the Philadelphia Eleven at The Church of the Advocate in Philadelphia at which Bishop Barbara Harris preached, a group of women at St. Mark's, Locust St.  Philadelphia, began to gather regularly; praying and studying, as they searched for their voices in worship. First they looked for hymns by women.   They found little in the Hymnal 1982..  They looked further. Out of this quest, and  with lengthy disciplined searching, they found many voices  they wanted to share.   Soon, Voices Found was compiled and published as the latest official Hymnal Supplement of the Episcopal church.   The hymnal focuses for the first time, on women's offerings to liturgical song. Beginning with feminine voices from  the First Millennium of Christendom, a nun's hymn  found in Constantinople (Kassia the nun (ca. 805), it includes a broad range of worldwide ecumenical song  ranging from the 9th century to the present.  Please enjoy Voices Found and sing today, rejoicing in the  grace of the songs of our sisters.
