Voices Found: Teresa of Avila October 17
Voices Found #88
Nada te turbe, nada te espante:
quien a Dios tiene nada la falta.
Nada te turbe, nada te espante:
solo Dios basta!
Let nothing worry or upset you:
whoever has God needs fear nothing.
Let nothing worry or upset you:
God alone is enough.
Jacques Berthier (1923-1924) adapt. Teresa of Avila
Teresa of Avila (1525-1582) knew evil. Her paternal grandfather, a Jew, was forced to convert to Christianity. Her father was condemned by the Spanish Inquisition for allegedly returning to Judaism. In her own work to establish and reform monasteries, she too, faced the Inquisition, although charges were eventually dropped. Despite persecution, or perhaps because of it, she is known for her books The Interior Castle, and The Way of Perfection, prominent treatises on Christian mysticism and Christian meditation. Through her experiences of illness, fear and terror, she learned that God alone is enough. Her words are a source of hope and comfort in the midst of sickness, fear, and persecution. Voices Found offers two musical settings of her profound texts. Now we can sing her uplifting words of comfort and love!
Voices Found #146
Nothing distress you, nothing affright you
Everything passes, God will abide.
Patient endeavour accomplishes all things;
Who God possesses needs naught beside.
Lift your mind upward, fair are his mansions,
Nothing distress you, cast fear away.
Follow Christ freely, his love will light you,
Nothing afright you, in the dark way.
Hell may assail you, it cannot move you;
Sorrows may grieve you, faith may be tried.
Though you have nothing, he is your treasure:
Who God possesses needs naught beside.
Words: Teresa of Avila (1515-1582); tr. Colin P. Thompson
Music: Many Mansions, Peter Cutts
