Laus Trinitati quae sonus et vita
ac creatrix omnium in vita ipsorum est.
Et quae Laus angliquae turbae
Et mirus splendor arcanorum
quae hominibus ignota sunt est et
quae in omnibus vita est
Words and Music: Antiphon 17 by Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179)
Hildegard's chant , Laus Trinitati, is an antiphon for the Trinity. Sung in procession as an introit, it focuses worship on the theme of the day. You could sing it as an antiphon before and after the Psalm, perhaps first in Latin and then English. It is also a lovely Communion meditation.
Hildegard's vision of the Creatrix celebrates God as our Mother and Father, as she expands traditional masculine imagery for Creation. Antiphon #17 is the only text in which Hildegard uses the name Creatrix which I have translated "Mother Creator." Now published in Voices Found, Hildegard's song of Creatrix is, for the first time, available to the whole Church.
In the illumination of Trinity, Hildegard envisions concentric circles: one of pure Light, the Quickening Sparkle, of the Creatrix; and one of pure Fire, the brilliant burning of the Holy Spirit; both surrounding the Son, the "holy mystery," the Incarnation.
O praise be to you Holy Trinity!
To our Mother, Great Creator, of all things living and of life itself.
O angelic chorus sounding forth in joyful praise!
O the wonderful silent splendor of the holy mysteries,
Trinity shining brilliance unknown to women or to men.
O quickening sparkle dwelling in all! Lifegiving life!
Life of all things gloriously created!
