"O fiery Spirit" is a short litany of prayers to the Holy Spirit. You can sing it effectively in procession as call and response. Since it is short it works well in a small parish church. Inspired by the "O Antiphons," including "O come, O come Emmanuel," these Pentecost antiphons offer images of the Holy Spirit. While the Advent antiphons express a profound human longing for the Messiah using titles included in the Hebrew Scriptures, the Pentecost Antiphons express a deep longing for the Spirit of Christ, offering images from the works of Hildegard of Bingen.
Hildegard knew God as "Living Light." From a young age she experienced startling visions of the Light which, as a child, she was afraid to share. As she grew older, as nun, she found that she could not get well from severe illnesses until she wrote about her Visions. Eventually, as Abbess of the Rupertsburg Abbey, she produced a manuscript, the Risencodex, that includes her visions, songs, and treatises. Today she is commemorated as a Saint in the Anglican Communion and as a Doctor of the Church in the Roman Communion.
