Voices Found: Seeking Light and Truth, Proper 26A VF 148, November 1
Send out your light, Psalm 43
VF 148
Antiphon: Send out your light and truth so they may lead me
Give judgement for me, O God, and defend my cause against an ungodly people
Deliver me from the deceitful and the wicked
For you are the God of my strength
Why have you put me from you?
Why do I go so heavily while the enemy oppresses me?
Antiphon: Send out your light and your truth so they may lead me!
That I may go to the alter of God, to the God of my joy and gladness
And on the harp I will give thanks to you, O God my God
Antiphon: Send out your light and truth that they may lead me
Why are you so full of heaviness, O my soul?
And why are you do disquieted within me?
Put your trust in God; for I will yet give thanks to the Most High
Who is the help of my countenance and my God.
Antiphon: Send out your light and your truth so they may lead me.
Words: Psalm 43 trans. John L Hooker adapted Lisa Neufeld Thomas
Music: Melody from Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179), Antiphon 16 Caritas Abundat, adapted by Lisa Neufeld Thomas
Psalm 43 is appointed for Proper 26A, and also for the Easter Vigil. My plainsong arrangement is an adaptation of Antiphon 16 by Hildegard of Bingen, a chant for cantor and congregation. Traditionally plainsong is sung a cappella. However, we offer an accompaniment to encourage congregational singing. At my request Dr. Barry Rose, a renown choral director in UK, wrote a traditional organ part that is published in the pew edition of Voices Found. Also at my request Dr. Carl Heywood, a renown choral director and composer in the US, provided a medieval style accompaniment which echoes the ancient voices of Hildegard's Abbey. It is published is in The Leader's Guide to Voices Found.
